Having our genesis in the 70s when austerity was the prevailing condition in Malaysia, the firm was primarily born out of principles and ideals of our founding partners who hail from two prominent families, the Kuok and Puthucheary families. These families have shaped the Malaysian legal and commercial industry and continue to sculpt their respectives legacies in Malaysia.
Even as we enthusiastically confront and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of legal practice in Malaysia and in the region, we want to remember the path that was trodden and paved for us to be who we are today. We are proud of our heritage and even more honored to share it with you.
Hailing from the renowned Kuok and Puthucheary families, Francis Puthucheary joins up with Robert Kuok Hock Nien’s (Malaysian businessman and billionaire) niece, Kay Kuok Oon Kwong to establish a law firm with its office located at Gim Shew Building, Johor Bahru. It was one of the first few law firms that did conveyancing on a large scale during those times including for one of the biggest property developers of the time, Pelangi Sdn. Bhd. (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of S P Setia Berhad).
Johanan Auseph Puthucheary, having been 5 years in practice, takes the helm of the firm. He expanded the scope of the firm’s services to include litigation, beginning an era in which the firm stamped its mark in the legal industry in the southern states of Malaysia.
Messrs Kuok & Puthucheary, Messrs Nadzarin, Sena & Lim, and Messrs WM Tan & Co merge to form Messrs Nadzarin, Kuok, Puthucheary & Tan (NKPT). The merger was in part made possible by the relationships built between Johanan Auseph Puthucheary, Nadzarin bin Wok Nordin and Catherine Tan Wei Ming while they were university mates in the University of London during the 80s. Given the established practice that each of the founding partners had in their respective firms, the merger was a strategic move to expand and consolidate its presence in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly in the emerging financial hubs of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor.
